Why Gel Works for Curls

What Makes a Great Curl Gel?

Not all gels are created equal. Here’s what matters:

Hold Level — How firmly the gel keeps your curls in place. Fine hair often does well with light-medium hold; thick or coily hair may need strong-extra strong.

Weight — Lightweight gels work for fine or low-density hair. Heavier gels provide more moisture for thick, dry, or coarse hair.

Cast Quality — A “hard cast” that scrunches out to soft curls is ideal. Some gels leave hair crunchy no matter what you do—avoid those.

Ingredients — Protein can strengthen curls but causes issues for some. Glycerin-heavy formulas may frizz in humidity. Silicones provide slip but need clarifying.

Your Gel Routine

Basic Wash Day Gel Routine

2-3x per week 25-40 minutes
1

Cleanse Your Scalp

2-3 mins

Focus shampoo on your scalp only. Let the suds run through lengths as you rinse.

shampoo
any sulfate-free or low-poo cleanser
Clarify monthly to remove buildup that blocks gel performance
2

Condition & Detangle

3-5 mins

Apply conditioner from mid-lengths to ends. Detangle gently with fingers or wide-tooth comb.

conditioner
any silicone-free conditioner
Rinse out most conditioner but leave a little slip for styling
3

Apply Leave-In (Optional)

On soaking wet hair, apply a leave-in for extra moisture and slip before gel.

leave-in
Kinky-Curly Knot Today skip if your hair doesn't need extra moisture
Fine hair may skip this step to avoid weighing curls down
4

Apply Gel

Use praying hands to smooth gel through sections, then scrunch upward from ends to roots.

Don't be shy—most people under-apply gel. Start with a golf ball-sized amount
5

Dry Completely

20-45 mins

Diffuse on medium heat or air dry. Do not touch until 100% dry.

Hair should feel hard (the cast). If it's still soft, it's not dry yet
6

Scrunch Out the Crunch

Once fully dry, scrunch hair gently to break the cast. Add a drop of oil to your palms for extra shine.

This is the magic moment—crunchy hair transforms into soft, defined curls

Troubleshooting Common Gel Problems

”My gel leaves my hair crunchy”

The cast should scrunch out. If hair stays crunchy: (1) make sure hair is 100% dry before scrunching, (2) try using less gel, (3) add a drop of oil to help break the cast.

”My gel causes flaking”

Usually means buildup or product layering issues. Clarify your hair, then try applying gel to freshly washed, soaking wet hair with nothing else mixed in.

”My curls fall flat by afternoon”

You may need a stronger hold gel, or try applying more product. Also check that you’re not touching your hair throughout the day.

”My gel makes hair feel dry”

Look for gels with glycerin or aloe in the ingredients. Layer a leave-in underneath for extra moisture. Avoid alcohol-heavy formulas.
