The Science of Frizz

Frizz happens when:

  1. Hair is dry — Thirsty hair reaches for moisture in the air
  2. The cuticle is raised — Allows humidity to penetrate
  3. Hair is disturbed while drying — Breaks curl clumps apart
  4. Products wear off — No protective barrier against humidity

The key to frizz control is keeping the cuticle sealed and protecting curls while they dry.

Cause #1: Applying Product to Damp Hair

The problem: Most men towel-dry their hair, then apply product. By that point, the hair is already starting to frizz.

Why it causes frizz: When hair is damp (not wet), curl clumps have already started to separate. Product applied now can’t pull them back together. You end up with defined clumps mixed with frizzy flyaways.

The fix:

Wet Application Method

Every wash day 2 minutes
1

Skip the Towel

Step out of the shower with hair soaking wet. Don't touch it with a towel.

Water should be dripping from your hair
2

Apply Product Immediately

Work your gel or cream through your hair while it's still dripping wet.

gel
Aussie Instant Freeze Gel any strong-hold gel
The water helps distribute product evenly
3

Scrunch Out Excess Water

Use a cotton t-shirt or microfiber towel to gently scrunch—not rub—your hair.

Scrunching after product application helps curls clump together
4

Dry Hands-Free

Air dry or diffuse without touching. Don't touch until 100% dry.

Patience here prevents all frizz from this cause

Cause #2: Touching Your Hair While Drying

The problem: It’s hard not to touch your hair. But every touch disrupts the gel cast forming around your curls.

Why it causes frizz: As gel dries, it creates a protective shell around each curl clump. Touching breaks this shell before it’s set, letting frizz in. Once disturbed, curls won’t re-form properly.

The fix:

  • Set a timer if needed—don’t touch for at least 30 minutes
  • Keep hands busy with something else
  • If you must touch, wait until 100% dry and scrunch gently

Cause #3: Humidity and Weather

The problem: You style your hair perfectly at home, then step outside and watch it poof up.

Why it causes frizz: High humidity means there’s a lot of moisture in the air. Dry or porous hair absorbs this moisture, causing the hair shaft to swell and the cuticle to lift. Result: instant frizz.

The fix:

Use Anti-Humidity Products

Humidity Protection Tips

  • Apply more gel — A stronger cast provides better protection
  • Avoid glycerin on humid days — Glycerin attracts moisture from the air
  • Don’t skip the gel cast — The hardened shell blocks humidity
  • Scrunch with oil — A drop of oil when breaking the cast adds extra sealing

Cause #4: Hard Water

The problem: If you live in a hard water area, mineral buildup on your hair prevents moisture absorption and causes persistent frizz.

Why it causes frizz: Hard water contains calcium and magnesium. These minerals coat your hair over time, creating a barrier that blocks conditioner and styling products from working. Hair becomes dry, dull, and frizzy no matter what products you use.

Hard Water Areas

UK: Most of South East England, London, East Anglia, Midlands — over 50% of UK homes have hard water

US: Arizona, Nevada, Texas, Florida, Kansas, Oklahoma, Indiana, New Mexico — significant portions of these states have hard water

The fix:

  1. Clarify with a chelating shampoo — Regular clarifying shampoo doesn’t remove minerals. You need a chelating formula.

    • Curlsmith Curl Reset — Available UK (Boots) and US (Ulta)
    • Malibu C Hard Water Wellness Shampoo — Available US
    • Umberto Giannini Curl Clarity Rinse — UK only
  2. Apple cider vinegar rinse — Mix 1 part ACV with 3 parts water, pour over hair after shampooing, rinse out. Helps remove mineral buildup.

  3. Consider a shower filter — Removes minerals before they hit your hair. Available on Amazon UK/US.

Cause #5: Overwashing and Dryness

The problem: Washing hair daily strips natural oils, leaving hair dry and desperate for moisture—which it grabs from the air as frizz.

Why it causes frizz: Your scalp produces sebum (oil) that naturally conditions your hair. Washing too often removes this oil before it can travel down the hair shaft. Curly hair needs this oil more than straight hair because the curl pattern makes it harder for sebum to distribute.

The fix:

  • Wash 2-3 times per week — Not daily
  • Co-wash between shampoos — Use conditioner only to refresh
  • Deep condition monthly — Intensive moisture treatment
  • Use a leave-in conditioner — Extra moisture layer before styling

Cause #6: Wrong Products

The problem: Heavy products, products with drying alcohols, or products that don’t suit your hair type can all cause frizz.

Products That Cause Frizz

Heavy creams on fine hair — Weigh down curls without providing hold, leading to limp frizz

Gels with short-chain alcohols — Alcohol denat, isopropyl alcohol, SD alcohol 40 can dry out hair

Glycerin in high humidity — Draws moisture from the air, causing hair to swell and frizz

Silicones without proper washing — Build up over time, blocking moisture

Products That Fight Frizz

Strong-hold gels — Create a protective cast that seals the cuticle

Leave-in conditioners — Add moisture that prevents humidity from penetrating

Oils (argan, jojoba, coconut) — Seal the cuticle when applied after styling

Anti-humectants — Block humidity in high-moisture environments

Cause #7: Sleeping on Cotton

The problem: Cotton pillowcases create friction that roughs up the hair cuticle overnight.

Why it causes frizz: As you move during sleep, your hair rubs against cotton fabric. This friction raises the cuticle, causing morning frizz even if you had perfect curls the night before.

The fix:

  • Silk or satin pillowcase — Smooth fabric reduces friction dramatically
  • Satin bonnet or buff — Protects curls completely (works for short hair too)
  • Pineapple loosely on top — Gather hair in a loose scrunchie on top of your head (medium/long hair only)

Cause #8: Product Buildup

The problem: Styling products, conditioners, and even hard water minerals accumulate on your hair over time, blocking moisture and making products ineffective.

Why it causes frizz: Buildup creates a barrier that prevents conditioner and styling products from penetrating. Hair becomes dry underneath the coating = frizz.

Signs of buildup:

  • Hair feels waxy or coated
  • Products don’t work like they used to
  • Hair looks dull and lifeless
  • Curls won’t hold definition

The fix:

Clarifying Reset

Once monthly (or when needed) 15 minutes
1

Clarify

2-3 mins

Use a clarifying shampoo (or even a regular sulfate shampoo for a one-time reset).

shampoo
Curlsmith Wash & Scrub Detox any clarifying shampoo
Lather twice if hair feels particularly coated
2

Deep Condition

10 mins

Apply a deep conditioner or mask from mid-lengths to ends.

mask
any hydrating mask or even regular conditioner left on longer
Clarifying strips moisture, so deep conditioning after is essential
3

Style as Normal

Apply your regular styling products to soaking wet hair.

Products should work better immediately after clarifying

Don't be shy with the amount—under-applying leads to frizz
5

Scrunch Out Water

Use a t-shirt or microfiber towel to gently scrunch excess water from your curls.

Never rub—always scrunch
6

Dry Completely—Hands Off

20-45 mins

Air dry or diffuse. Do not touch until 100% dry.

This is where most frizz happens. Patience pays off.
7

Scrunch Out the Crunch

Once completely dry, scrunch to break the gel cast. Add a drop of oil for extra sealing.

Hair should transform from crunchy to soft and defined
